The figure showed that the two-way race is between MTN and Airtel as the two operators accounted for 98.1 million out of the total 143.7 million internet subscriptions in the country in June 2020.
Influence of Covid-19 and OTTs
The advent of the coronavirus, health crisis must have aided this push since the internet subscription recorded by the two firms increased in June at the heart of the pandemic. The proliferation of Over the Top Services (OTTs) such as Facebook, WhatsApp, WeChat
and IMO may also have contributed to this surge, as subscribers are able to initiate voice and video calls using their data subscriptions.
Revenue by billions
MTN ranked in N79.9 billion from data subscriptions in three-month. This is a 40.9 per cent growth on its data revenue year-on-year. MTN’s data revenue for the same period in 2019 stood at N56.7 billion.
Airtel also recorded a 39.7 per cent year-on-year growth in data revenue as it generated N43.9 billion ($122 million) in June 2020.
