Dr Segun Aina, President Fintech Association of Nigeria is Fintech Africa Person of the Week

Fintech Africa Person-of-the-Week [FTPOW] is a weekly recognition of a person, male or female, who is impacting the Fintech ecosystem across Africa. Dr Segun Aina, President Fintech Association of Nigeria, is our choice this week.

All roads led to Lagos, Nigeria last week as Fintech Association of Nigeria hosted the Nigeria Fintech Week 2019.  The two-day conference as part of the event was attended by fintech stakeholders from 29 countries.

Under Dr Aina’s leadership, the group has built global partnerships that are recognized by the African Union, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, African Development Bank, Afreximbank and others.

“These self-regulatory organisations have brought needed coordination to the Fintech ecosystem in Nigeria and Africa with linkages to and alliances with similar organisations in other markets,” he said.

Dr Aina is a global professional banking leader, internationally rated fintech influencer and thought leader. He is a respected futurist and a philanthropist. With three decades of distinguished banking career, he retired from active banking service after a six-year tenure as Managing Director and CEO of a bank.

His core interest was operations and technology by using technology to deliver delightful banking services and products in a very efficient manner. He was the president of Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (2012 to 2014), West African Bankers Association (Nigeria Chapter) 2001 and the inaugural Chairman of Global Council of Global Banking Education Standards Board (GBEStB) 2017 to date.

A technology visionary, he established Fintech Associates in 2002. He is the founding president, Fintech Association of Nigeria; initiator and founding president of the Africa Fintech Network; founder and chairman of The Fintech Institute among others.

Described as Nigeria’s fintech envoy, Dr Aina has incubated a number of successful fintech startups. He now sits on the board of various institutions in the banking, insurance, agriculture and technology sectors etc.

Besides, he was also a member of the UK-Africa Fintech Investment Group, a UK Government initiative co-chaired by the Lord Mayor of London and UK Prime Minister Ambassador for Business Fintech.

Dr Aina is Fellow of London Institute of Banking and Finance, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators, Institute of Directors, Nigerian Institute of Management as well as Member, Toronto Region Board of Trade, Canada and Canadian Council for Africa.

Dr Aina is a distinguished alumnus of the University of Lagos, University of Ibadan, INSEAD France, Harvard Business School, IMD Switzerland and Lagos Business School. He has contributed to the academic sector through his membership of the pioneer Advancement Board of Obafemi Awolowo University 2006 to 2012 and chairmanship of the Advancement Board of Federal University of Technology Akure, (2011 to date).

He is also the Chairman of National Think Tank (an initiative of the University of Ibadan Research Foundation of which he is a member) and member, Osun State University Advancement Board. He holds the Nigeria National honours of Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) and has received honorary doctorate degrees from three universities.
