The divisional head, Financial Technology and Innovation at Guaranty Trust Bank [GTB], Deji Oguntonade has said the intention to make the bank’s customers the centre of innovation is an idea borne out of its culture to place customers ahead of what the bank does.

Oguntonade in an exclusive interview with Fintech Africa at the launch of ‘Habari’, Nigeria’s largest platform for music, shopping, lifestyle content and more said that “there will always be payment behind every innovation” the bank is bringing to the customers.

“We are following the customers. We are making the customers the centre of our life. Whatsoever they want we will give it to them as there will always be payment behind everything and we are not bringing payment to the forefront anymore. We are bringing customers to the forefront”, he said.

He explained that Habari in Swahili means “What is New” and it is a product that offers users direct access to the largest catalogue of local and foreign music online and a seamless shopping experience and exciting way to connect with friends.

“It is built around the everyday lives of customers. Habari is the first mobile platform in Nigeria that is created by a financial institution that focuses on enabling people’s needs and lifestyles rather than providing a limited bouquet of regular banking products.

“The mobile application is open and free for all to download, as it does not require mobile banking details and it offers a wide range of services all of which are accessible to anyone regardless of where they choose to bank”, he said.

“Habari offers an end-to-end shopping experience that allows users to buy goods and services directly from over 10,000 small businesses. Habari users can also shake their phones to find and connect with friends, split bills, transfer and receive funds and pay for utilities, subscriptions and other services”

Commenting on the launch of Habari, the Managing Director and CEO of GTB plc, Segun Agbaje, said: “By reimagining the role of banking and driving innovation in how we serve customers, we have built a platform that is less about us as bank and more about our customers and everything they need to enable their lifestyle.”
